In this daft but easy-going Britkid movie from 1978, Patrick Troughton stars as the owner of a time machine which doesn't quite work properly. Sound familiar?! Actually, this isn't about the famous Timelord but it does have all the fun and charm of Troughton-era Doctor Who. A Hitch In Time also stars the brilliant Brummie actor Jeff Rawle - here playing a hilariously nasty teacher and his various - and very similar - ancestors throughout history who all happen to have the same "sniffing" disorder. Rawle (who also has Doctor Who connections, appearing in the 5th Doctor story "Frontios") is best known for his role as "George" in the satirical sitcom classic Drop The Dead Donkey. Also stars Michael McVey, Pheona McLellan, Sorcha Cusack and Ronnie Brody. Made by the classic, bygone and very much missed Children's Film Foundation.
The plot: In an old castle, two schoolkids meet an eccentric inventor who has invented a time machine. The only problem is that it doesn't work properly. The inventor uses the kids to test out the time machine and they end up hopping through history, each time bumping into nasty teacher Sniffy's even nastier ancestors.
Filmed very much in the style and feel of 70s Public Information Films ("Play Safe!" springs to mind!), A Hitch In Time is a must-see for British 70s nostalgia freaks and has a rather nice "jolly hockey sticks" ending! ;)
