Magnus, Robot Fighter

Here we have the complete series (46 issues) of Gold Key's "jewel in the crown": the simply awesome Magnus, Robot Fighter - quite possibly one of the greatest comics of all-time (well, up to a point!). Created by Dell editor Chase Craig and writer/artist Russ Manning, the character was a futuristic sci-fi spin on Tarzan (the comic adaption of which Russ Manning also worked on for Gold Key). Manning worked on the series until #21, followed by stints by Space Family Robinson artist/co-creator Dan Spiegle and Aquaman co-creator Paul Norris before the comic lapsed into reprints halfway through the series.

The plot: Magnus was raised apart from human society by Robot 1A. Physically perfect and expertly trained in martial arts, Magnus was capable of taking on a steel-plated robot with his bare hands. In addition, 1A had built a device into Magnus's head, enabling him to receive robot-to-robot radio signals.
Once he felt Magnus was ready, 1A introduced his protege to human society. Magnus's mission was to save the world from over-dependence on robots — particularly those that had inexplicably turned evil. Magnus made his home in the city of North Am, where he soon began his war on rogue robots.

Everything about this series is cool - the title, the sublime painted cover art, the quality strips by writer/artist/co-creator Russ Manning, the designs of the robots and cities, everything. It's no wonder that Jim Shooter bought this character back along with Gold Key's Turok, Son of Stone and Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom for his Valiant line in the 90s - he obviously knew quality when he saw it.

I'd love to see a Magnus console game - a straight-forward roam-around smash-em-up in which Magnus roams around smashing up different robots! Also, I think the time is right for a big-budget Magnus, Robot Fighter movie: Keep the retro-futuristic look of everything (such as Magnus and his outfit, the robots, the cities, etc), stick to the original comic story and keep it simple to follow, have some excellent CGI/special effects, get a good looking cast (plenty of babes!) of people who can do the job (don't know who could play Magnus - there's plenty of actors to choose from), get decent producers/director and avoid those with a Christ fixation who want to smother it in pseudo-religious crap (a la Bryan Singer/Superman Returns and Russell T Davies/Doctor Who for example)... Should be a huge box-office smash-hit!
