Egghead's Robot

From the late, great and sorely missed Childrens' Film Foundation, here we have the 1970 'classic' Egghead's Robot in which we get two "Cheggers" for the price of one! Starring Keith Chegwin and his twin brother Jeffrey (in one of only two ever acting roles, so it seems according to IMDB's filmography list - the other being in a 1973 Play For Today with Patrick Stewart no less!), Kathryn Dawe (in her only ever acting role, so it seems from IMDB's filmography list), the late, great Richard Wattis, the ever excellent Patricia "Hyacinth Bucket... sorry, I mean Bouquet" Routledge in an early role and the late, great Roy Kinnear.

The plot: 'Egghead' Wentworth (Keith Chegwin) adapts his father's robot paratrooper (Jeffrey Chegwin) to perform his chores but forgets to program it to keep him out of trouble.

I may be easily pleased(!) but when I watched Egghead's Robot on a cozy, dull, grey Sunday afternoon last week, I found the film to be a lot of fun and very entertaining. Highlights of the film include Cheggers' robot twin repeatedly winning the cricket match for him single-handedly and Roy Kinnear's hilariously cliched park keeper in an innumerous amount of prat-falling (a "comedy basic" as the great Graham Lister used to say). Daft, charming, inoffensive, old-school fun - Egghead's Robot is the kind of kids' film they absolutely don't make anymore. If you enjoy this, be sure to check out the equally fun Hitch in Time starring Patrick Troughton and Jeff Rawle.
