Great, atmospheric B-movie based on the Marvel comic cult classic. No big-name stars, a modest budget and a great straight-to-video/tv feel make Man-Thing actually feel more special than the recent batch of big-screen, big-budget, over-the-top, overloaded, crash-bang-wallop superhero movies. By no means a classic and certainly not a perfect adaption of the original comic character but definitely enjoyable cult viewing. Man-Thing at least deserves an equally low-key follow-up and give the character a bit more exposure - I actually think it would be perfect fodder for a little late-night tv series a la The Night Stalker. Directed by Brett Leonard (director of The Lawnmower Man and Virtuosity, amongst others).
The plot: Kyle Williams (Matt Le Nevez) thought taking the new post of Sheriff in the sleepy town of Bywater would be exactly the change of pace he needed. But the peaceful town is now what it seems. While investigating a series of gruesome murders, Kyle discovers that the locals are hiding a frightening secret. Torn between who and what to believe, the only straight answers he receives are from feisty young schoolteacher Teri (Rachel Taylor). Together they embark on a quest to unravel the truth.
