Taking it's cue from the James Stewart-starring masterpiece Harvey, here we have the cult 1971 Childrens Film Foundation film Mr. Horatio Knibbles which tells the tale of a large creepy looking rabbit (dressed in fine gentlemen attire!) who can only be seen by a young girl. Starring Lesley Roach, Gary Smith, Anthony Shepherd and the late, great David Lodge (an always welcome face in any British comedy production), amongst others. The screenplay was co-written by Peter Blackmore who was also involved in writing all three Morecambe & Wise movies. Look out for an appearance by Roy Barraclough - best known for his work with Les Dawson and as Coronation Street's Alec Gilroy.
The plot: Charming tale about a large white rabbit who can only be seen by a young girl. Great, atmospheric B-movie based on the Marvel comic cult classic. No big-name stars, a modest budget and a great straight-to-video/tv feel make Man-Thing actually feel more special than the recent batch of big-screen, big-budget, over-the-top, overloaded, crash-bang-wallop superhero movies. By no means a classic and certainly not a perfect adaption of the original comic character but definitely enjoyable cult viewing. Man-Thing at least deserves an equally low-key follow-up and give the character a bit more exposure - I actually think it would be perfect fodder for a little late-night tv series a la The Night Stalker. Directed by Brett Leonard (director of The Lawnmower Man and Virtuosity, amongst others).
The plot: Kyle Williams (Matt Le Nevez) thought taking the new post of Sheriff in the sleepy town of Bywater would be exactly the change of pace he needed. But the peaceful town is now what it seems. While investigating a series of gruesome murders, Kyle discovers that the locals are hiding a frightening secret. Torn between who and what to believe, the only straight answers he receives are from feisty young schoolteacher Teri (Rachel Taylor). Together they embark on a quest to unravel the truth.

From the late, great and sorely missed Childrens' Film Foundation, here we have the 1970 'classic' Egghead's Robot in which we get two "Cheggers" for the price of one! Starring Keith Chegwin and his twin brother Jeffrey (in one of only two ever acting roles, so it seems according to IMDB's filmography list - the other being in a 1973 Play For Today with Patrick Stewart no less!), Kathryn Dawe (in her only ever acting role, so it seems from IMDB's filmography list), the late, great Richard Wattis, the ever excellent Patricia "Hyacinth Bucket... sorry, I mean Bouquet" Routledge in an early role and the late, great Roy Kinnear.
The plot: 'Egghead' Wentworth (Keith Chegwin) adapts his father's robot paratrooper (Jeffrey Chegwin) to perform his chores but forgets to program it to keep him out of trouble.
I may be easily pleased(!) but when I watched Egghead's Robot on a cozy, dull, grey Sunday afternoon last week, I found the film to be a lot of fun and very entertaining. Highlights of the film include Cheggers' robot twin repeatedly winning the cricket match for him single-handedly and Roy Kinnear's hilariously cliched park keeper in an innumerous amount of prat-falling (a "comedy basic" as the great Graham Lister used to say). Daft, charming, inoffensive, old-school fun - Egghead's Robot is the kind of kids' film they absolutely don't make anymore. If you enjoy this, be sure to check out the equally fun Hitch in Time starring Patrick Troughton and Jeff Rawle.

Being both a lifetime fan of David Bowie and the world of surreal and avant-garde performance art, it's only fitting that I post something that combines both!
From 1967, we have the brilliantly bizarre The Image - a freaky short movie co-starring Michael Byrne about an artist whose painting comes to life and haunts him. This short movie seems to have been a heavy influence on the superb David Mallet-directed promo video for Bowie's 1979 classic (and one of my personal favourites) "Look Back In Anger". The Image is a superb, atmospheric, little arty horror-thriller.

From 1970, we have the superb, surreal pantomime The Looking Glass Murders starring Bowie's mime mentor (and, allegedly, ex-lover) Lindsay Kemp. Adapted from Kemp and Bowie's original stage play Pierrot In Turquoise, Bowie co-stars as "Cloud" and sings a few songs including "When I Live My Dream" and a catchy little ditty called "Threepenny Pierrot" which Bowie fanatics (such as myself!) will know that the tune was also used for the early Bowie classic "London Bye Ta-Ta".
A favourite of mine, The Looking Glass Murders is a see-it-and-never-forget-it (although you may want to!) viewing experience!

Previously posted on the old 55 Bells (what a great site that was - sorry I got rid of it!), here we have whacky and camp 70s superheroine fun with Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. The show heavily parodied the style of the cult 60s classic Adam West and Burt Ward show Batman and has a similar feel to the so-bad-it's-almost-cool Legends of the Superheroes. Starring Deidre Hall, Judie Strangis (very cute as "Dyna Girl") and Norman Alden. Created by Ruby-Spears and produced by Sid and Marty Krofft.
The plot: Electra Woman and Dynagirl are gorgeous superheroes who battle a bevy of costumed villains. They wear skintight outfits with capes, and operate out of the secret Electrabase, which is headed by Frank Heflin, who designed and built the heroines' sophisticated equipment.Note: The first episode is missing from this collection. The episode in the pack purpoting to be the first episode is actually the later episode "Return of the Sorcerer". A 15-minute pilot for a new series was made in 2001 starring Markie Post and Anne Stedman. This version was set 25 years after the original series with a retired Electra Woman brought back into action by a fan who ends up becoming Dyna Girl (Electra Woman's husband apparently left her for the original Dyna Girl!). The pilot was never officially broadcasted (although you can find it through various means such as conventions and the internet) and the series wasn't picked up.The plot: It begins at a carnival in the '80s. When an accident on a ferris wheel leaves a little girl hanging on for dear life, it's Electra Woman to the rescue! Cut to present day and the little girl, Judy, seeks out her heroine, and finds that Lori (Electra Woman) is now an alcoholic living in a run-down trailer. Judy tries to convince Lori to revive her act, but Dyna Girl has run off with Electra Woman's ex-husband. So Judy dons the Dyna Girl costume and books them a personal appearance at a "jewelry store" (that turns out to be a pawn shop). When thieves bust in brandishing a gun, they find their robbery attempt foiled by an out of practice Electra Woman and the new Dyna Girl! Soon Lori decides to finish college, so she imposes on Judy in her dorm room. Here's a quickie. Red Wolf - "masked avenger of the Western plains" - was a short-lived Marvel series, running for nine issues between 1972 and 1973. The first version of the character ("Johnny Wakeley") originally debuted in Avengers #80 in 1970 followed by a different version of the character ("William Talltrees") in the first issue of Marvel Spotlight in 1971.The plot: Red Wolf is a spiritual mantle of the Cheyenne people. It is handed down by the god Owayodatta to champions of peace and Avengers of justice. The first known Red Wolf was an adopted Cheyenne man named Johnny Wakeley. His adoptive parents were killed by Native Americans in retaliation for the U.S. Army cavalry's massacre of their own people. Pursued by members of his own tribe, Wakeley stumbled into the burial place of a former man known as Red Wolf and was visited by the spirit of a Cheyenne god named Owayodata. He was given the ceremonial garb of the Red Wolf, and the coup stick, his totem of power, and became the first known recorded Red Wolf. Red Wolf used his newfound great skills and prowess to promote peace between the white and Native American peoples. William Talltrees is the third man to take the identity of Red Wolf. Talltrees was born in modern day Wolf Point, Montanna. He was the son of Thomas Talltrees, a Cheyenne tribal leader, and grew up hearing tales of the legendary Red Wolf. William was bullied into selling his property to corrupt businessman Cornelious Van Lunt, who’s henchmen later killed William's family. William swore vengeance, finding and donning the ceremonial garb of Red Wolf. Owayodata visited him and empowered him with the spirit of Red Wolf. The new Red Wolf found a wolf cub whom he named Lobo and trained to be his companion. He was raised from childhood by a white couple in the late 19th century.

Just to start by saying - I begin this post with what is practically known as a "rant". So, for those not interested in reading/hearing personal opinions and a touch of bad lanugage, please move on to the download department below! ;)
Years before that Spongebob Wankshite garbage, there was the brilliant The Ren & Stimpy Show - the surreal, irrelevant, practically Python-esque show that Spongebob oh-so-desperately wants to be (and fails miserably, in my opinion). Although if you check out Wikipedia's entry (obviously written by a bunch of dribbling Spongebob fanatics), it would seem that Spongebob apparently "opened the door to allow more use of adult humor" as if Ren & Stimpy hadn't previously existed. Yeah, right. For me, the difference between Ren & Stimpy and Spongebob is that whenever I see Spongebob on tv, I want to scream my head off and gun down the tv screen - such is the hatred I have for that overly-popular, godawful shit. I truly cannot bare the sight of that show. Note how it comes from Nickelodeon - who has cashed in on the "subversive humour" and "whacky animatics" of The Ren & Stimpy Show in a myriad of ways ever since it first aired. Anyway! Such was the cult popularity of The Ren & Stimpy Show at the time that it spawned many, many and, most would say, poorer (and very blatant) imitations such as Cow & Chicken (I'll admit that I did like that show!), 2 Stupid Dogs, Rocko's Modern Life, The Angry Beavers and Catdog, amongst others. Along with The Simpsons, The Ren & Stimpy Show truly began the trend for cartoon shows to appeal to adults as much as kids.
Here we have the complete collection of Marvel's comic-book version of cult classic The Ren & Stimpy Show. The regular series ran for 44 issues - which is pretty good going for a tv spin-off title - and a batch of one-shot specials. Don't know what other R&S fans think but I thought this was a very decent and rather funny comic adaption of the brilliant tv show. I was pleasantly suprised to see that the art and humour is as it should be and doesn't seem to have been "sanitised" in any way. Issue #6 is very surreal/bizarre featuring, as it does, special guest-star Spider-Man! Each issue, along with the specials, feature appearances by R&S character favourites including Powdered Toast Man, Muddy Mudskipper and Mr. Horse.
