Richard Hayman & His Orchestra - OO LA LA - An Evening In Paris

Another test card friendly Parisian music release - I bought this the same time as Cafe de Paris, this was also recommended by test card music enthusiasts seeing as this release has also been used on various test transmissions. If you enjoyed Cafe de Paris, then you're sure to enjoy this too.

Cafe de Paris - Twenty -One Accordion Favourites

From Jack Emblow and his accordion, Cafe de Paris - 21 Accordion Favourites does what it says on the tin and is a great collection of test card friendly accordian music - some of which have been used on actual test card and Ceefax/Teletext transmissions way back in the day. Very nice indeed and a must-own for test card music collectors. Personal faves on here are the "Allo Allo" theme and "Chanson d'Amour" (altogether: "rat-ta-tat-ta-tat!") - but it's all great. I bought (or is that brought?- I can never remember nowadays since my brain's been going on the blink for some time now) this back in the early 2000s when I was on a test card music and easy listening trip - it was recommended by the Test Card Society or something along those lines(!) and it's still a pleasant listen to this day.

Bend it! Trattoria Menu.3

Second in a series of four utterly bizarre and brilliant compilations from the Exotica label featuring songs and dialogue from the world of football (Exotica are best known for their similar range of Exotic Beatles compilations, well worth checking out if you're an obsessive Fab Four fan like meself!). Pearls on here include Jack Charlton's hilariously bad spoken word ditty "Geordie Sunday" (which reminds one of the equally nutty "If" by Telly Savalas, the old Hovis ad music and anything by William Shatner), The Devoted's "I Love George Best" and Mr.Martini's "Gascoigne Please (Delirio Gazza)".

The Mozart Lounge - Groovy Easy Listening & Scat Classics from the Mozart Edition Library

That subtitle heading "Groovy Easy Listening & Scat Classics from the Mozart Edition Library" almost reminded me of the Borat movie for some reason! Here's another classic repost... If you enjoyed the Test Card Classics, then here's some more tunes of a similar nature you're sure to enjoy. The Mozart Lounge is a total must-own for collectors of light 'n' easy/lounge/library music seeing as it collects music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as featured on BBC Radio, BBC Ceefax, BBC tv and local radio. The Mozart Lounge's kaleidoscopic flavours go far beyond mere easy listening - from the swinging scat vocals of Walters Band & Chorus and the Cliff Hammer Choir to funky soul-jazz influenced cuts from notable European jazzmen Theo Schumann, Eugen Cicero, Manfred Ludwig Septet and Sante Palumbo.

The Wurzels - Never Mind The Bullocks

Previously ripped and upped on the old CosmoBlog way back in yesteryear, here's a pretty lacklustre collection of supposedly funny covers from the formerly brilliant Wurzels. A lot of people like this album - but I'm not one of them. Funnily enough, the cover/title of the album is probably the best thing about it. Only tracks which work, in my opinion, are Blur's "Country House" - which was tailor-made for The Wurzels - and Oasis' "Don't Look Back In Oasis" - if only because it's hard to ruin such a classic song. "Come On Santa" isn't bad either as it seems to be a Wurzel original - can imagine it being a popular at christmas parties. Other than that, well below par. The problem? Well, past Wurzel parodies tended to change the lyrics to suit the situation of "life on the farm" to hilarious effect (re: "Combine Harvester", "I Am A Cider Drinker" and "Father Bill's Cowman" for example) but for most of this album the band have stuck to straight covers with barely a lyric change but with some embarrassing oos and aahs now and again to remind you of who they are. Main thing I noticed about Never Mind The Bullocks is that most of the tracks are covers of songs ranging between the period of 1996 to 1999, which makes me think the material is a lot older than it's eventual release date, the relevance of which dates the album by half of a decade. I mean, Catatonia, Babybird, Chumbawumba and Gina G were well out of the public interest by the year 2000, if not a lot sooner! Want the best of The Wurzels? Get it here! Want a second-rate novelty album? Download this here now! You may well enjoy it a bit more than me, after all...

Quark - The Complete Series

Here's a treat for cult tv and sci-fi fans, an absolute hidden gem of a show... Possibly taking it's name from a revolutionary avant-garde sci-fi anthology magazine of the early 70s and arriving during the sci-fi boom of the late 70s on the back of the success of
Star Wars, here we have futuristic sitcom Quark (not to be confused with the popular European soft and creamy cheese of the same name - or maybe soft and creamy cheese is the intention!). Not very well-receieved on it's original transmission and even to this day, Quark is a rather decent sci-fi comedy from none-other than the brilliant, legendary Buck Henry - co-creator of Get Smart, writer of 60s all-star cult flop Candy (I liked it but my wife didn't!) and superb actor in movies such as the Nicholas Roeg/David Bowie masterpiece The Man Who Fell To Earth, the Bowie/Rosanna Arquette cult comedy classic The Linguini Incident, the vastly underrated Breakfast of Champions and To Die For (of which he also wrote the screenplay), to name but a few. The pilot originally aired in 1977, followed by the short-lived series in 1978.

Richard Bejamin with those gorgeous twins...

Quark stars actor/director Richard Benjamin (co-star in sci-fi classic Westworld and star of one of my all-time fave family movies Packin' It In) as intergalactic trash collector(!) Adam Quark who longs for a better and more glamorous job, along with Tim Thomerson as Gene/Jean (one of the funniest characters in the series) the "transmute" - a half male, half female humanoid who switches between sexes without forewarning(!) to hilarious effect, Conrad Janis (Mindy's dad from Mork & Mindy) as Otto Palindromeis - the tyrant in charge of Perma One who gives Commander Quark his assignments and Cyb & Patricia Barnstable as gorgeous spacebabe twins (in lovely shiny hotpants) Betty I & Betty II aka The Bettys (one is a clone of the other - but which is which?!)! And, last but by no means least, Andy the robot - who could be related to Battle Of The Planets' 7-Zark-7! That's the crew amongst others that I haven't mentioned - such as Dink (the "Cousin It" of Quark), the almighty being known as The Head ("Don't tell me about headaches - I wrote the book about headaches!"), the gorgeous four-armed Interface, the Spock-like Ficus Pandorata and Ergo the pet catrepillar/maggot-like blob - but I'm sure you'll get to know them well throughout the eight episodes.

And again...

The plot: Set on the United Galaxies Sanitation Patrol Cruiser, an interstellar garbage scow operating out of United Galaxies Space Station Perma One in the year 2222. Adam Quark works to clean up trash in space by collecting "space baggies" — unfortunately for Quark, while circumstances frequently dropped adventure into his lap, he was always ordered back to collecting garbage when the action was over.

And again...

A satire of sci-fi ranging from Star Wars and Star Trek to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Flash Gordon with Police Squad!-style visual and verbal gags throughout, Quark is a pleasant surprise of a show which I've no doubt would have been improved upon if it were ever given a second seriesback in it's day. That said, like Police Squad!, the minimum number of episodes has assured it a cult following - yet another show that maybe died before it's time but lasted way before it got too tiresome. Surprised nobody picked it up in the early 80s for a movie adaption though...

Fascinating television sci-fi fact-a-roonie: "Quark" is also the name of a major character from
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (as any Trekkie knows!) and, also, a name of a robot race from Doctor Who (the funny looking ones in the Troughton-era story "The Dominators")! So even if "quark" isn't as big in America as it is in Europe, it's certainly big in the world of television sci-fi cheese!!! And, as we all know, nothing tastes better than cheesey sci-fi! Severely underrated in my opinion, Quark is one of the funniest sci-fi comedies I've seen outside of Red Dwarf and Galaxy Quest. Enjoy!!

Some People Are On The Pitch - Songs From Football's Archives

Howay the lads! Come on you 'Bells!
I watched and thoroughly enjoyed The Damned United (the "fiction-based-on-fact" account of Brian Clough's years at Derby and Leeds United) followed by the splendid ITV documentary Clough very recently and I thought - it's about time I put a pure football song comp on t' CosmoBells. And sooooo... Here we have an absolute treat for novelty music fans and also, obviously, the footie fans. This long deleted, highly collectible football song compilation from the same people that bought you the You Are Awful! series is the creme-de-la-creme of football song compilations. Not only do you get gems like West Ham's "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", Arsenal's "Good Old Arsenal", The Spinners' "Football Crazy", Ennio Morricone's "World Cup Argentina", the football folk of Dave & Toni Arthur's "The Football Match", The Tony Hatch Orchestra's "Theme From Sportsnight", Kop Unlimited's funktastic "Football Hustle" and Leyton Orient's sublime "We The Kings of Orient Are"(!) but you also get the complete 1970 England Football Squad's album The World Beaters Sing The World Beaters featuring classics such as "Back Home", "There'll Always Be An England", "Lovey Dovey", "Lilly The Pink", "Congratulations", "Glory-O", "Cinammon Stick" and "Sugar Sugar"! 'Tis a must for those with a deep football/soccer inclination, so it is... Enjoy!

The Morecambe & Wise Show - guest-starring Edward Woodward

As a tribute to the late, great Edward Woodward, here's a treat of an episode of all-time British comedy classic The Morecambe & Wise Show. This is the fourth episode of the second series from 1969. Eric & Ernie are on top-form and there are hilarious guest-appearances from Peter Cushing and Edward Woodward. Cushing returns to the show demanding payment for his last appearance (as the years went by, Cushing would continue to make guest-appearances on various M&W shows demanding his payment!), cue some very funny material:
Cushing: "I was in your show and I never got paid."
Eric: "Sounds like one of our shows!"
Ernie: "You were never in one of our shows."
Cushing: "I can prove I was in one of your shows."
Eric: "Prove it?! How?! How?!"
Cushing: "I would like to show you a short excerpt..."
Eric: "Well you can't - this is a family show, you see!"

Woodward stars in the grand finale - in which he plays a copper (of course!) - in a play wot Eric wrote entitled "Murder At The Grange - or The Mouse Trap". Also in the play, Eric plays a famous conductor - although, for hilarious comedy reasons, he's dressed as the wrong kind of conductor... Other guests on the show include legendary Scottish singer Kenneth McKellar, Irish folk trio The Pattersons and, of course, M&W show bigband regulars Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen.

Dr. Who and the Daleks + Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. Original Soundtrack

For the first time ever, here are the complete soundtracks/scores to the colourful 60s' big-screen "Dr. Who"/Dalek movies that starred Peter Cushing as everyone's favourite time-travelling grandfather: Dr. Who! I'm a huge fan of those nutty 60s movies, the second, grittier movie Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. being my fave out of the two (the title's quite a crazy mouthful alone!) which co-starred Bernard Cribbins and Ray "Mister Benn" Brooks ("a man with 'the knack'!" as he was billed on the trailer!). That second movie was, of course, based on the all-time classic Doctor Who story "The Dalek Invasion of Earth". And, as you may or may not know, the late, great Roy Castle co-starred in the first movie. The cute Roberta Tovey starred in both movies as Dr. Who's grand-daughter Susan (check out Who Is Doctor Who? to hear Tovey's hilarious single called "Who's Who").

The package does what it says on the tin - so if you've always wanted the music from these films or are just a keen collector of anything to do with Doctor Who and/or Daleks, then here you are! Personally (and being my good honest self), I found the scores on the most part to be rather bland to listen to without the visuals of the movie to go with it but, all being said, it's great to finally have these things officially released. The thing is, I've never been that much of a fan of standard movie scores that rely on atmospheric orchestral music - I prefer stuff that is a bit more groovy, funky, poppy or experimental. Highlights for me are the title music on both films and, especially, the groovy single "The Eccentric Doctor Who". The thing is, those best tracks I mentioned have already been made available on the superb

Who's Who is Who?...
Dr. Who ponders that question, yesterday.

Benny Hill - The Ultimate Collection

So I'm finally back after a few weeks of dead computer mayhem. I have a new pc now (with Windows 7 - which has took some getting used to after years of XP) and I've been busy installing the necessary programs, updating drivers, hardware, etc, so bare with me if I'm not quite up to speed at the moment with the CosmoBells. Everything looks and feels totally different with the new machine which is taking a lot of getting used to.

As a testing-the-waters type thing, here we have a quickie post of a superb collection of comedy tunes (formerly posted way back on the old CosmoBlog) from none other than the all-time comedy genius Benny Hill. The lad himself wrote and/or co-wrote all of the tracks on here - many of which you will most likely know from him performing them on his long-running classic The Benny Hill Show. Many of the tracks parody the old 50s & 60s rock 'n' roll and rockabilly likes of Elvis 'The King' Presley, Marty 'Father of Kim' Wilde, John "Johnny Remember Me" Leyton and Mike "Come Outside" Sarne, to name but four. Personal faves on here include Benny's legendary "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)" (of course), "Those Days" (a parody of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" which features the classic line "How could you kiss the butcher when we owe the milkman so much?"!), "Harvest of Love" (I love the line which goes "I will kiss your lips, those tempting lips - the only ones that can thrill me, And I will hold you tight 'neath the stars so bright - if my wife ever finds out, she'll kill me!") and the similar "Lonely Boy" ("You see her name was Pat - my case comes up next week!"). Naughty but innocent humour that has long since died out.
