The Hospital

Utterly superb cult classic black comedy (similar in tone and style to Britannia Hospital - a film I thought I had already posted on CosmoBells but it seems it was on the previous 55 Bells instead) starring the always exceptional George C Scott - absolutely excellent performance here I might add - as a suicidal doctor struggling to find meaning in his life whilst a murderer stalks the halls of his hospital. Look out for the supremely gorgeous Emma Peel herself - Diana Rigg - in one of her salivatingly sexiest roles as - it possibly rivals her infamously raunchy image where she joins the Hellfire Club in that episode of The Avengers - "A Touch of Brimstone". Diana, of course, also starred in my all-time fave Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service where, this may be a spoiler here for anyone who hasn't seen it(!), she ended up marriying Bond and then immediately met a memorably tragic end - cue Louie Armstrong and that song from Rutger Hauer's final Guiness tv ad... Anyway, sorry - I actually thought I was writing for a post on On Her Majesty's Secret Service when I suddenly just remembered! So anyway, back to The Hospital. This great movie is directed by Arthur Hiller, director of many cult classics, who also directed the Don Quixote musical Man of La Mancha starring Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren, the classic Wilder-Pryor movie Silver Streak and the Steve Martin 1984 comedy The Lonely Guy, amongst many others. Paddy Chayefsky (esteemed writer of such classics as Altered States and Network) not only wrote the The Hospital but also is the (uncredited) opening narrator (incidentally, his opening narration sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the movie). Also starring, amongst others, the brilliant actress Frances Sternhagen and the always excellent Richard Dysart (he was the doctor in Being There - one of my all-time favourite movies).

The plot: Herbert Block is chief of medicine in a major teaching hospital. His wife has left him, he is impotent and his children have both disowned him. He is toying with the idea of suicide when patients begin dying, not from complications, but from the erroneous treatments the Hospital is giving them. People in the wrong beds are given wrong medicines, sent to operating theaters for incorrect surgery, and found in waiting rooms dead of natural causes. Barbara Drummond has come to take her comatose father back to the Sioux reservation where he operates a clinic and they each reach out to each other for emotional support, as a shadowy figure stalks the patients and staff of the hospital.

This movie has it all: A marvelously black script with an exceptional cast, George C Scott at his finest and Diana Rigg at her horniest - it doesn't get much better than this in my opinion!

Various Test Card Music Collections

Here we have a batch of superb, rare and obscure collections of testcard/library music from the Bliss and Recur labels. Most or, indeed, possibly all of these tracks have been used on British and European test transmissions way back when the testcard, closedown and pages from Ceefax were a normal part of everyday television life (oooooh the good old days, eh?). If you're into this stuff - as I am - then these are an absolute must-own. Featuring sublime music from the legendary likes of the Heinz Kiessling Orchestra, Werner Tautz, Frank Valdor and many others, if you've been getting the Test Card Music and Test Card Classics series then these have just got to be in the collection too! Muchas enjoyus! ;)

The Late Shift

As you probably know, there's been more than a bit of a stink recently regarding a certain US tv network and certain US talk show hosts - with most, including David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel, coming out for Conan O'Brien. I'm not gonna go in to the fascinating - if a little longwinded - details, but it's all over the net from IMDB to Wikipedia for you to find out for yourself (if you have no idea what I'm talking about). But the recent ruckus made me dig this curiosity out for an unfashionably topical CosmoBells posting...

The Late Shift is an enjoyable tv movie from 1996 based on events surrounding Jay Leno and David Letterman similar in tone to what's been happening recently between "Big Jaw" and "Coco". The excellent cast includes John Michael Higgins as David Letterman, Daniel Roebuck as Jay Leno, Kathy Bates (who, in my opinion, steals the show with yet another in a long line of superb peformances), Bob Balaban (one of the many great actors in
Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Ed Begley Jr., the always superb and immensely good-looking Treat Williams, Jon Getz, Peter Jurasik, amongst others. Rich Little also stars as Johnny Carson and Sandra Bernhard plays herself.

The plot: Based on the true events concerning the selection of a late night TV talk-show host. Johnny Carson was nearing the end of his 30 year role as host of The Tonight Show and TV executives were desperate to sign the best replacement host. The choice was between Jay Leno and David Letterman. The choice was not simple or straightforward because other TV networks were also interested in both contenders. What went on behind the scenes defies belief.

Mike Anthony & Barry Blue - Disco Happening (Bruton Library BRH4)

For library/funk fans, this one is a cool, funky disco groover featuring tracks which have been used in classic 70s Brit shows such as The Sweeney and The Benny Hill Show besides countless others. The brilliant track "Northern Soul", for instance, is none-other than the old theme tune to the BBC's Points Of View! Other tracks on here include, amongst others, include "Funky Moog", "Dawn Motown", "Soul Stomp" and "Funky Feeling" - the cool titles speak for themselves! Enjoy! A tiny note in case someone mentions it: I've seen this library classic listed under "Mike Anthony" and "Miki Antony" by various sellers around the net - I don't know what the reasons are for the different names.

Dutch Girls

A superb cast of Britain's finest including, amongst others, Bill Paterson (one of my all-time favourite actors), Colin Firth (in one of his earliest roles), Timothy Spall, John Wells, Robert Addie, Adrian Lukis, and the always superb Colin McFarlane (in what must be his earliest role) star in this saucy comedy drama made by London Weekend Television. Written by William Boyd - who infamously perpuated a hoax in the art world back in the late 90s with his book Nat Tate: An American Artist 1928-1960 (David Bowie, who was in on the joke, read excerpts from the book at a lavish launch party, fooling art critics who thought the fictional Nat Tate was real and, of which, some actually claimed to remember the artist!). Director Giles Foster has worked prominently in Germany the last few years, directing some decent tv mini-series usually featuring a mixed cast of British and German actors/actresses.

The plot: An adolescent British field hockey team goes to Holland, where they find something far more interesting than tulips and windmills - hot, sexy women! They are so busy chasing girls that they forget all about their hockey match.

Test Card Music 2

I was up all last night ripping and posting on CosmoBells and this was to be the last post of the evening (or rather 5:30am). The stuff I originally wrote for this post (which thankfully never saw the light of day on here) was a totally manic, insane and completely irrelevant amount of surreal rambling due to the fact that I was very, very drunk (as the late Rowley Birkin QC used to say) and in a slightly good mood. So, anyway, all that weird shit has been scrapped and here, in it's place, is a far easier on the mind, less embarassing and simpler post instead!...

As promised, here's volume 2 of Apollo Sound's superb testcard music series which is ingeniously titled Test Card Music 2. This one has some 80s tracks on here - which are always a joy to here with that crazy mix of bleepy bloops, synthetic beats and sexy sax or should that be saxy sex? No, it's definitely sexy sax. Oh yes.

Dr. Lonnie Smith & David "Fathead" Newman - Boogaloo To Beck

One of the first albums I ever ripped and uploaded on the old Cosmoblog years ago - in fact, I think it was the second or third ever. Here's a fresh rip of it in a nice 320 kbps quality for those that want it.

From Dr. Lonnie Smith and his special guest David "Fathead" Newman, here we have a rather nice collection of jazz covers of songs by the pop genius that is Beck. I much prefer the Beck originals (they're far more exciting and "off the cuff") but fairplay to anyone who can cover his songs in a different and interesting way. Whatever, this is definitely a must-listen for fans of lounge, easy listening and jazz. If there was one truly great thing about this album, it would be the fact that it spans the many different eras and sounds of Beck, not just the popular hits. Personal faves: Well, "Tropicalia" is a stand-out as it is actually feels very close to the original underrated Beck classic and has a great bit of sax-a-ma-phone. "Devil's Haircut" is nice (if a little on the slow side) - I mean, what a fucking classic the original is, eh? "Sexx Laws" is really groovy - it's been done really well here in a jazz stylee. "Loser" is an avant-garde mess and I absolutely love it! What Lonnie and co have done with that one is sublime - possibly one of the best tracks on the album although a pity that it's far shorter than it should be. "Where It's At" though has to be the star of the show - it's absolutely funktastic and, I'd say, is perfect pickings for a jazz re-imagining. "Nobody's Fault" is sublimely tranquil - it does the original justice even if it is so different in comparison. Same goes for "He's A Might Good Leader" - actually not by Beck but by blues legend Skip James - but it has always been one of my fave, let's say, "off kilter" Beck tracks from one of his more off-the-wall albums, the superb One Foot In The Grave.

According to the sleevenotes, this album will "put some wiggle-waggle in your hips and some funk in your soul". I'll leave it up to yourselves to agree or disagree on that one! But, as you know, we could all do with a bit of wiggle-waggle from time to time (I felt like having a good old wiggle-waggle some time ago but, instead, I spent my time posting this on the blog instead)...

Overall, Boogaloo To Beck is a superb album and should be commended for a more-than-novel approach to, what I would call, a tricky and unique subject.

Personal Services

From David Leland the writer/director of Wish You Were Here and Monty Python genius Terry Jones, here we have cult classic Brit sexcom Personal Services starring Julie Walters (who seemed to appear in a large number of popular movies around this time in the mid-late 80s including Educating Rita and Buster). Also starring many a familiar British tv face including Shirley Stelfox, Alec McCowen and Benjamin Whitrow, to name but three out of very many. Based on the notorious oh dear shock horror tabloids-lapped-it-up exploits of "Madam" Cynthia Payne who supposedly ran a brothel at 32 Ambleside Avenue, Streatham and was . You know how it is: Full grown adults want a bit of fun in their lives and some uptight, hypocritical, conservative, morally superior types have to go and ruin it and call the police.

The plot: The story of the rise of a madame of a suburban brothel catering to older men, inspired by the real experiences of Cynthia Payne.

Interesting note #1: Apparently, according to Terry Jones, Ireland has banned only four movies - three of them directed by Terry Jones! Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Monty Python's Life of Brian and, this one that be here, Personal Services. Nice one, Tel!

Interesting note #2: Julie Walters was born in Smethwick - where I'm from! And lived a couple of streets away from me! And was a trainee nurse at the hospital I was born in! Wowzers! Bloody wowzers indeed!! Nice one, Jules!

The Mozart Lounge - Volume 2

Superb collection of testcard-friendly tracks in this equally-as-great follow-up to the first excellent volume of The Mozart Lounge. An absolute must-own for library/tv/easy listening/lounge music collectors. Personal fave tracks on here would probably have to be the sublimely funky "Cool Steel" by The Firebirds, Wolf Baki's dreamlike "With You Alone" and the light and fluffy flutey "Street Waltz" from The Sante Palumbo Group. If there were one fault with this compilation - as with the previous volume - it would be the fact that it's under 20 tracks long with an approximate running time of around 50 minutes. I'm sure there could have been room for a few more... But I digress. Listening to this lovely and quite groovy selection of "light and easy" jazzy loungey music made me almost forget the wanky troubles of this rather shite world - almost but not quite. But anyway!... Enjoy and feel free to say thanks! ;)

Femforce #110-112

More Femforce for those that want it. Issues #110 to #112 were a 3-part mini-series focusing on the character Rayda - a human dynamo who, with the aid of her protective containment suit, has learned to control her electrical discharges and has become an important contributor to the Femforce in their battles. Gorgeous actress and stuntwoman Julie Michaels features on the back page dressed as Rayda. Apparently, the character was actually based on Julie and she was to play Rayda in a movie based on the character.

Star Slammer

Here we have Fred Olen Ray's awesome fun 80s sexploitation sci-fi trash
Star Slammer aka Prison Ship. Starring Sandy Brooke, Susan Stokey, Ross "Supercock" Hagen, Marya Gant, Bobbie Bresee, Richard Hench (Playgirl's Man of the Month, April 1984(!) - same year as when this movie was actually made!), Michael Sonye and the late and legendary John Carradine and the equally late and legendary Aldo Ray, amongst others.

The plot: Gorgeous space traveller Taura (Sandy Brooke) is captured on the planet Arous. Taura is accused of a murder she didn't commit by Bantor (Ross Hagen), chief flunkey of the all-powerful Inquisitor (Aldo Ray). She is incarcerated in an intergalactic prison ship, populated by beautiful, scantily clad women. Thus does science fiction segue into "babes behind bars",complete with a sadistic female guard named Muffy (Dawn Wildsmith). Unjustly confined to a prison planet, Taura and another prisoner plot their escape, all the while having to put up with lesbian guards, crazed wardens and mutant rodents.

The dvd cover art is awesome - a pity then that it's such an exagerrated interpretation of the movie itself! The original VHS cover (see below the great German video cover/poster art) is a lot more closer to the truth!...
