No more uploads for a while...
Well, I uploaded files again through another carrier and still R*pidshare isn't showing them. So there won't be any uploads for a while - if ever. I don't know what the deal is - whether there is some kind of problem with RS that they don't know about or if they've deliberately just put a block on me uploading any more files. This, together with the Blogger problems, has forced me into a no-win situation at the present so I guess for the time being there won't be any more uploads and posts from me until things are back to normal.
Even more bizarreness!
Old comments (from 15 April) have turned up as new comments and, what's worse, I checked the posts for those comments and they're no longer there - along with my replies! Now this is really getting weird - it feels like some kind of hack attack although I don't know how any of this is possible.
I can only imagine that it is something to do with these recent Blogger problems which, it seems, are still awaiting fixes:
I can only imagine that it is something to do with these recent Blogger problems which, it seems, are still awaiting fixes:
"Some users are experiencing comment count discrepancies on their blog, specifically for older comments during the December-January timeframe. We have isolated the underlying problem though, and are working to release a fix shortly."
Problems... problems... RS blocking files and Blogger on the blink!

First of all, to anyone who tried downloading The Music Of ITC today and failed because of a shitty R*pidshare message giving reasons of "copyright" - you'll be pleased to know that the files have been reuploaded so get them while you bloody can!
Secondly, blogger has been on the blink for a while now - mainly with the comments section. It hasn't been much of a problem though until now - where someone posted a comment that I approved but it never showed up! So if you have posted a comment and it hasn't turned up - chances are it's because of some weird blog comments bug. All I can suggest is that you try posting the comment again - and if you are about to comment on anything then maybe post the comment twice to be on the safe side! I thought I'd mention that as I don't want to give any impression that I ignore comments!
Update: Seems RS is blocking quite a few of my uploads for "copyright" reasons. This isn't good. If you see something on this blog and you want it - get it while you can! There may be some big changes at CosmoBells in regards to uploading if things continue the way they are at the moment.
Further update: 3 hours later and I've reuploaded some more files but none of them are showing on RS! Now, this could be a temporary problem and the files may (and hopefully) show up later. Or it could be a carrier issue. But, from what's been happening lately, I think this is beginning to look like my days with R*pidshare are coming to an end. Since I've worked so hard to keep that account going for so many years and am now getting this mistreatment, I'm not sure if I'll upload any more to RS if this kind of bullshit is what's regularly going to be happening and I seriously doubt I'll be signing up with any other file hosters. This may sound like a bit of overreacting but I read so many complaints about RS and their "policies" that I am convinced things are really changing now for the worse. All I can say at the moment is if there is anything on this blog that you want then download it while you can! At this moment I'm reuploading the files again to a different carrier - I hope that does the trick. If it doesn't work out then bare with me as things might start getting quiet again around here whilst I think of where I'm heading next!...
All the best,
Cosmo.

Sesame Street - Season 6 Episode 666 (1974)

Another great episode of golden age Sesame Street, this one is episode 666 and comes from Season 6, originally transmitted in 1974. The Count introduces this season premiere episode - perhaps an acknowledgement to the fact that this is episode 666 (the devil's number!). Guy Smiley hosts gameshow "Beat The Time" featuring contestant Grover. "E" gets a lot of promotion again during this episode - so you can see how these shows may have influenced the late-80s/early-90s rave scene who grew up on it (although I never heard of anyone getting addicted to "z" or the number "5"). The whole Sesame Street gang sing an annoying brainwasher of a song. Bert & Ernie cause trouble again at their local movie theatre. Beetle Bailey makes a guest appearance in animated form. Hilarity ensues when Farmer Grover tries to get the horsey to push the cart rather than pull it, requiring Kermit to explain to him what he's doing wrong. This episode is bought to you by the letter E and, guess what, yet again - the number 2!

Denim - It Fell Off The Back Of A Lorry & Denim On Ice

Denim was a short-lived 90s band from ex-Felt frontman Lawrence, very much based in a sort-of late-70s/early-80s new wave stylee. I only really got into Denim because of one record released in 1996 - "It Fell Off The Back Of A Lorry" and for me - despite hearing much/most/all of Denim's releases to date - it remains Denim's finest moment (outside of a rather excellent cover version of the theme from Robin's Nest on follow-up album Novelty Rock). On the back of that brilliant song, I bought the single (one of the few that did!) and the accompanying album Denim On Ice (ditto!). One accusation often levelled at Denim by the music press at the time was that their song titles were often better than the actual songs - I would say that was halfway to the truth but don't let that put you off. Denim On Ice has some great tracks on including the punchy "Council Houses", "The Supermodels" and the amusing "Grandad's False Teeth" that pays slight tribute to the Clive Dunn-Herbie Flowers "masterpiece" later in the song. For me personally, though, nothing comes close to brilliance of "It Fell Off The Back Of A Lorry" and the fact that it never became a hit and barely anyone heard it outside of a few like myself who listened to Mark Radcliffe's old nightly Radio 1 show is, like the song's subject matter, criminal. Also included here is 90s remix legend DJ Spaceboy with his clubbed-up 1999 techno white label "Stolen Goods" remix.

Theme From The Professionals

Aaaah yes, The Professionals - one of the most popular British action series of all time. And one of the last of it's kind - Dempsey & Makepeace and Cats Eyes would basically be the last of these old school shows before things totally changed in British tv land as the 80s became the 90s and the 70s were long in the past. One of the interesting things I found about The Professionals is that it has, for decades apparently, inspired a world of bizarre fanfiction. Although not as bizarre as some Knight Rider fanfiction which I happened to come across when I first got the internet a decade back of which - just out of curiosty, you understand - I read a few extracts before collapsing into a fit of genuine shock and hysterical laughter. Apparently in the world of Professionals fanfiction, according to an article I just read on a site called Fanlore: "Despite his 'tough guy' appearance, a sizable number of authors depict Bodie as a willing or even eager bottom who wants to be dominated." Well, anyway, I'm saying nothing! Except to say that I hope you enjoyed that little titbit of information and now it's time to move on to the real reason for this post!...
From 1997, here we have the splendid 2-cd single tribute to one of the most popular British action series of all time, The Professionals. Yes, I know I already mentioned above that it is one of the most popular British action series of all time - but, see, I said it again now! This release came out on the back of the success of the Cult Fiction releases (the Blue Boy 12" version of the main track of which appeared on Cult Fiction Royale) and during what seems to be the peak of the retro cult tv craze which occurred in Britain during the 90s. Best thing about this release is that every track is excellent - with the winners, in my opinion, being the absolutely superb Galdez Ambrose Project drum 'n' bass remixes. Really sublime stuff they did there with Gary Roberts providing some smooth vocals - makes for great late night chilled listening. Also of note is the excellent funky soul version (I kid you not!) of the theme tune as sung by Alexia, retitled as "You & Me". The main tracks, funky big beat remixes by Blue Boy (he of the totally classic "Remember Me" hit from earlier that year) - are also great and the "red" release also features a version of the classic theme from Laurie Johnson's Big Band - rounding off a superb and highly collectible double-disc tribute.

This Is... The Return of Cult Fiction & Cult Fiction Royale

I ripped and posted these years back in my very early Cosmoblog days but I could have sworn I'd also reposted them on this here CosmoBells at some point - but after checking the archives it seems I was well wrong! So, anyway, here they are now for your delectation - two of the finest cult tv theme collections ever released: The Return of Cult Fiction and Cult Fiction Royale. The Return of Cult Fiction is a pretty decent compilation - highlights include Dennis Waterman's full theme song from Minder: "I Could Be So Good For You" (always worth hearing for the line: "I can even help you breathe!"), Alan Tew's theme to the Two Ronnies sketch "The Detectives", Mike Post's classic theme to Magnum P.I., and Alan Hawkshaw's original classic Grange Hill theme, amongst a few others. Well, I say two of the finest - but the fact is that I would rate Return of Cult Fiction as a "very good" rather than "excellent". But Cult Fiction Royale is another story...

Cult Fiction Royale, in my opinion, is the creme de la creme of cult theme collections - I've had this cd since it was originally released in 1997 and only a few other comps have come close to beating or equal it. I mean - it really has it all! This superb 2-disc compilation features the full versions to tons of cult tv theme classics (along with a smattering of movie themes and lounge classics) - including Tony Christie's classic "Avenues & Alleyways" from The Protectors, Supercar,The New Avengers, Crown Court (oh yes!), Hill Street Blues, Whodunnit (the cult Jon Pertwee panel game show which I'm still awaiting a dvd release of), Tiswas, Fireball XL5, Man In A Suitcase, Get Carter, Sapphire & Steele, U.F.O., The Baron, Captain Scarlet, the action packed 80s hit Dempsey & Makepeace...

...and the truly excellent full themes to Tales Of The Unexpected and Return of the Saint, amongst many, many others. You also get the 12" version of Blueboy's rather good "Theme From The Professionals" remix. Originally released during the mid-90s easy listening/lounge/cult tv and 70s funk craze that swept Britain for a few years (and which spawned brief success for the likes of Mike Flowers), these compilations are a must-own for connoisseurs of easy/lounge/library/cult tv music.

Del Shannon - The Further Adventures of Charles Westover
From 1968, here we have Del Shannon's psych masterpiece - The Further Adventures of Charles Westover. For fans of Del Shannon and, especially, collectors of psychedelia - this one is an absolute must. All kinds of weird and wonderful sounds on here as Del not only gives in to and embraces the era of hazy cosmic jive but does it in style and still keeps the respect for the music - sounding better now as it ever has done with Shannon's - or should that be Westover's - voice on top form. Top track just has to be the magnificent "I Think I Love You" which has more than a touch of Peter Cook & Dudley Moore's "Bedazzled" about it, in my opinion. Haunting, atmospheric, dramatic - the song is utterly captivating - as is the rest of the album with tracks such as "Silver Birch", "Colour Flashing Hair" which very much has a psychedelic Beatles kinda-thing going on, the dreamlike "Gemini" - easily my second favourite on the album, the absolutely kicking "Runnin' On Back" which has some remarkable sonic twists and turns and a great organ throughout, the wonderfully psychedelic and beautiful "Magical Musical Box" - Del's voice is awesome here and the freaky and unbelievably funky album closer "New Orleans (Mardi Gras)" has it all going on. The whole album makes for sublime listening and proves what a tragic shame it is that it is so releatively obscure and rarely a track from it receiving much radio play. Also of note are the bonus tracks that include: the superb reimagining/cover of "Runaway" called "Runaway '67" which is dramatic, orchestral psyche-pop at it's finest - a rare case in which the remake is almost as good as the classic original; an excellent cover of Boyce & Hart's "She"; the totally roaring "Stand Up" which has more than a nod to "Runaway" - superb stuff; "The House Where Nobody Lives" is classic psychepop with the kind of lyrics you would expect for such a song of that era; and the excellent and catchy "You Don't Love Me" - originally a b-side for the 1968 US-only single "Raindrops" and co-written by Del - ends this superb special edition.Del Shannon

Del Shannon - The Definitive Collection

If Morrissey had been American and born in the mid-30s, he would very likely have grown up to be Del Shannon. Or he may also have been Bobby Goldsboro or Peter Sarstedt. Well, anyway... Real name Charles Westover, the late, great Del Shannon - for the uninitiated - is one of THE rock and roll legends and certainly a lifelong favourite of mine. With a distinctive voice and sound, Del's songs were often about tragic circumstances and had a bit more meat to them in terms of writing than the more typical songs of the early rock and roll era. Although not a particularly good looking guy, Del was never the less a teen idol mainly because, like Mozzer, the songs could hook you with their intelligent lyrics that draw you in and the catchy tunes that accompanied them - so his tales of heartbreak and despair obviously connected to a lot of teenagers at that time. Shannon's über classic and surely one of the greatest records of all-time - "Runaway" - is a masterpiece of simplicity and effectiveness and the sound has an otherworldly quality thanks - in no small part - to keyboardist Max Crook's superb solo on the Musitron - an instrument that was, in fact, an heavily-modified clavioline.
This superb 2-disc set features all the hits including Runaway, Hats Off To Larry and Little Town Flirt and more - including plenty of rock and roll covers and even some country folk - from the years between 1961 and 1965. A particular track of note is a cover of The Beatles' "From Me To You" - Del was the first American to cover a Beatles song (Del was a big fan of the "British Invasion" pop phenomenon that happened during the 60s in the US and would, himself, eventually become more popular in the UK than in his home country) and it actually charted in the US before the Fab Four's version (their version failed to make an impact until after Del's when they rerelased it the following year to big success). A favourite track of mine on this collection is the underrated 1964 single "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun)" which has a touch of "Runaway" combined with an ever-so-faint hint of the oncoming psychedelic era - an era in which Del Shannon made his finest ever album (my personal opinion - but maybe/hopefully not just mine!) which will be up next...

The Music Of ITC

This is one of the releases I've been waiting for half my life! It certainly has to be a new favourite in my music collection. From the ever-excellent Network, we have here an absolutely superb, totally essential, must-own collection of cult tv themes, incidental music and cues from ITC's cult classic action shows of the 60s and 70s.

A bit of funk, a bit of brass, a bit of bossa, a bit of jazzy suspense, what have you - all kinds of genres are catered for within the 113 tracks spread across two jam-packed discs which consist of music from Danger Man, Gideon's Way, The Baron, The Saint, Man In A Suitcase, The Prisoner, The Champions, Department S, Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), Strange Report, The Persuaders!, Jason King, The Protectors, The Adventurer, The Zoo Gang and Return Of The Saint. Celebrated, legendary composers covered on this brilliant collection include Edwin Astley, Albert Elms, Ron Grainer, Robert Farnon, Roger Webb, John Cameron, Wilfred Josephs and Paul McCartney!

Since I love all of the ITC cult shows, I also love all of the music on these discs so it is difficult to pick anything out as a favourite (although the theme tunes to Return Of The Saint, Man In A Suitcase, The Protectors and The Prisoner are all-time favourites of mine anyway) but if I had to pick a highlight - it would probably be the batch of music, cues and incidental music from The Saint on disc 1 and Return Of The Saint on disc 2 including Track 46 (untitled) which is an absolutely sublime slow version of the Return Of The Saint theme tune (much in a similar vein to the Sweeney end theme), Track 48 (untitled) which is a frantically fast and action packed piece of funk based around the Return Of The Saint theme, Track 49 (untitled) which is an awesomely funky, saxxed-up version of the Return Of The Saint theme (in terms of funktastic excellence, it's on a par with the actual theme tune - possibly even more so), Track 51 which is an excellent, atmospheric, almost whacky, easy listening version of the Return Of The Saint theme (in a similar vein to the theme to The Pink Panther) and the rather bizarre, upbeat Europop song "Taking It Easy" by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis which was used as the theme song for Return Of The Saint in Europe.

On the back of this release, I'm hoping for a dvd and soundtrack release of the (sadly rather middle-of-the-road) The Saint tv movie series from 1990, a co-production between the UK and Europe starring Simon Dutton - a decent actor who deserved a better supporting cast but the series is/was a must-see for deprived Simon Templar fans such as myself. Another notable treat on this collection is Macca & Wings' funktastic theme music for The Zoo Gang. Only notable exclusion on this superb collection is the rather good theme music to the Return Of The Saint tv movie The Saint And The Brave Goose (which combined what was originally a two-part story into one feature-length adventure) but I'm hoping that Network will release a Return Of The Saint soundtrack collection (as they have done with other cult ITC shows) at some point and, if so, hopefully it will turn up on there.

Shut It! The Music Of The Sweeney

"Put yer trousers on - you're nicked!"
One of the very first discs I ever ripped way back for the old, long deceased X-Y-Z-Cosmonaut's Cosmoblog in it's early days (around half a decade or so back), here's a favourite of mine that I've decided to re-rip (to a higher quality bitrate). Now, I know this cd has been doing the rounds for a while now since I first ripped it so I hope cult tv music fans find this release worth their while as I've also scanned the excellent cd booklet that comes with it, box and inlay this time around. This is one of the grooviest, funkiest and downright most excellent library/tv soundtrack comps ever released (in my humble - and perhaps - even expert opinion!) and, along with the superb music by a whole host of legends such as Johnny Hawksworth, Jacques Arel, Keith Papworth, Duncan Lamont, Brian Bennett, Johnny Pearson, Simon Haseley and of course Harry South's excellent theme tune (I always loved the slow end credits version of the theme which we get here in a superb full-length version), there's plenty of amusing Regan & Carter soundbites from the series scattered throughout.
